The game was named by Falguiere ‘baccara’, the Italian word for zero, because the tens and face cards in the deck have the value of zero when playing the hands of Baccarat.

Legend has itthat Falguiere could have based the game on the Etruscan ritual of the nine gods.

“Prayed to the blonde virgin sitting on her tiptoes, waiting for the nine-sided die to fall. The result of the die decided her fate. If an 8 or a nine were thrown, she will be a priestess. If she throws a number six or seven then she would be barred from all future religious activities. However, if she threw any number other than six, she would be thrown into the sea.”

How to Play Baccarat

Through the years, as the game has passed from generation to generation and from nation to nation many variations of the game and its rules are available. You can still play games like Chemin de Fer and Punto Banco, Baccarat Banque and Midi Baccarat around the globe.

But, in the end, the basic rules of the game have remained constant in all variations with minor changes due to variation.

To avoid confusion, we’ll focus on the fundamentals of the game and standard rules of Punto Banco. The majority of the games of Baccarat that are found in the most popular gambling meccas of the world (US, UK, Macau, Sweden, Australia etc.) Online, and in fact online, is the “Punto Banco” version.

The main distinction between old-fashioned Baccarat and Punto Banco is the in the latter the casino banks the game continuously rather than playing the banking role that is a revolving door between the players at the table.
The Game’s Goal

A player must correctly place a bet to win a Baccarat hand. In Baccarat, the terms “Player” as well as “Banker” don’t dictate where you must bet as they are just words used to indicate the various hands dealt. Any player at the table may place a bet on “Player”, Banker, or a tie.
Baccarat is a game of skill.

A shoe is usually comprised of six to eight cards. Before hands are dealt the bets must be in place. Once all bets have been placed, both the banker and player will be dealt two cards. The ‘natural 9’, which is the highest hand, is the hand which has been dealt. It is a mix of both the cards dealt. This is the highest total points in a Baccarat hand. To eliminate the first digit, all totals greater than 10 must be more than 10.

The points of a card are according to Ace = 1 2-9 = face values 10, picture cards = zero. If a hand contains a 10, a 3 and an 8 the score total is 3. Likewise, a hand containing eight and a 7 would result in a five point hand as the first digit in a two digit score must be removed.

The game will end if the player who draws the most cards that the natural number of 8 or 9. The score closest to 9 will win the hand. If both players have a score of 8 or 9, the hand will be ruled to be as a tie. Any money placed in either the tie will be reimbursed.
Making a third card

Player

The Player stands on scores of between 6 and 9. If the Banker doesn’t score a natural 8 or 9 (which ends the game) the player is dealt a third deck when their hand has a score between 5 and 0.

Banker

The Banker’s actions will be similar manner to the above described if the Player doesn’t have an additional credit card. If the Player does take the third card There are rules that govern the actions taken by the Banker.

If the player draws a 9 through to an Ace the Banker draws with a score of 0-3, and stands pat with the score of 4-7.
If the Player draws an 8 the Banker draws with score 0-2, while the player is standing with a score of 3-7.
If the Player draws an amount of 6, 7 or 8 the Banker is able to draw with an average of 0-6, and the Player stands with a score 7.
If the Player draws 4/5, the Banker is drawing with an average of 0-5. the Player stands with scores of between 6-7 and 0-5.
If the Player draws either a 2 or 3, the Banker draws with scores of 0-4, and stands at a standstill with a score of 7-7.

Baccarat may appear to be complex, but it’s one of the most simple games at casinos to play. Be aware that there are only three outcomes you can bet on (Player or Banker) and that the hand you play will be filled with 9 wins. It is not necessary to know any specific rules before placing a wager, as every action is predetermined by the cards dealt by the dealer.

The Rise of Baccarat

Baccarat isn’t just for the wealthy. The ease of playing and its strategy combined with (in the terms of casinos) good odds have led to the number of Baccarat tables at casinos to grow over the past few decades.

Naturally, the internet has also helped fuel the game’s popularity.

Baccarat is the most profitable game in casinos worldwide. In Macau for instance in Macau, where Macau has been the top one casino location from the mid-2000s. 88% of their $33.2 million revenue was derived from Baccarat in 2017.

Baccarat is the most well-known table game played on the Las Vegas strip, only overshadowed by slots which include many slot machines, more than Baccarat tables. Sin City.

The game also received plenty of media attention just a couple of years ago when world famous poker pro Phil Ivey ended up in courts in London and Atlantic City after ‘winning’ more than $20 million from two of the world’s most famous casinos. Ivey used a technique known as ‘edge-sorting’ in order to find minor flaws in the casinos themselves, and to assess their values and thus gain an advantage over the house.

After Crockfords refused to pay the player, Ivey sued Crockfords in London for PS7.7m. Then in Atlantic City the Borgata decided to suit Ivey for $10m claiming he cheated them by edge-sorting.

In both cases , the casinos won however, some gambling and legal experts felt that Ivey was perhaps harshly judged since he simply sought to gain an edge by identifying imperfections in the casinos’ cards. Ivey did not physically alter, mark or play with any of the cards in the Punto Banco variant I played. The entire action is performed by the casino dealer.

Although the publicity from the cases was not good for Ivey but it did bring millions of potential Baccarat players to the table. The story was reported in national newspapers and magazines all over the globe in addition to being retold by CBS News in an episode of “60 Minute Sports” which aired in October 2014.
