  • by

A fascinating remodelled world map reveals the world’s most popular fashion brands in 2021 – and it’s Zara that takes the top spot.

On the map – generated using 12 months of Google search data – country names have been supplemented by their residents’ most popular ‘fashion searches’. The majority of the table is made up of big labels, but also contains retail stores with in-house lines.

Spanish fashion house Zara takes the top spot in 37 countries worldwide, followed by Nike (36) and Zalando in third (14). When compared to the same data from last year (where Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Chanel were the most popular brands), it highlights how much fashion choices have changed over the past 12 months.

The map has been drawn up by financial advice site money.co.uk, which established the most-searched-for fashion brand on Google in each country over the past year.

According to the map, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Portugal, and Monaco all have Zara as their most popular fashion brand.

Money.co.uk said: ‘Founded by Amancio Ortega in 1975, Zara has gained a cult following by fashion-conscious individuals as a result of its fast replication of trends, colours and designs that are present on the catwalk. With over 2,200 stores and a presence in 88 countries, there’s no wonder that it’s the brand most countries are searching for.’

For the USA, the most popular brand is revealed as Macy’s, the American department store chain. It has several in-house clothing lines

Second-place Nike is the favourite fashion brand in countries including South Africa, Mexico, India, and Malaysia.

Third place Zalando, headquartered in Berlin, and famous for selling everything from high-street labels to high-end designers all on one website, tops the searches in Austria, France, Italy and its birthplace of Germany, among others.

As well as a world map, money.co.uk has also produced maps with regional breakdowns for the search data.

The European map shows that most of the continent is firmly in awe of Zara, with 20 countries in Europe searching for it more than any other brand.

However, it’s Next that rules the roost in the UK and Asos was the most popular fashion search in Ireland, Malta, Cyprus and Iceland, whilst Luxemburg was the only European country to search for the luxury brand Louis Vuitton the most.

For the USA, it’s not a single ‘label’ that came out on top. The most popular fashion search is revealed as Macy’s, the American department store chain, which has several in-house clothing lines and is a new entry in the ranking.

However, it’s the leisurewear label Lululemon that Canadians are searching for more than any other brand.

Founded in Canada in 1998, the brand has gained a reputation for producing quality sportswear that is also fashionable and comfortable, Money.co.uk points out.

Zara is also making an impression in Asia, being the most-searched-for fashion brand in 12 Asian countries.
